Dr Alec McDonald


Alec McDonald graduated from the University of Glasgow Medical School in 1986 and undertook specialist oncology training in Glasgow and on Merseyside.

He has more than 20 years experience at consultant level, based in the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. His specialist clinical practice now deals exclusively with lower gastro-intestinal malignancies (colorectal and anal cancers).

His special clinical interests include the use of adjuvant (post-operative) and neo-adjuvant (pre-operative) therapies, non-operative management of rectal cancer, the incorporation of new drugs into clinical practice as well as the use of combinations of radiation & chemotherapy and the treatment of metastatic disease.

He is actively involved in clinical research for the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers and is co-investigator of a number of ongoing GI clinical trials. His previous research has included laboratory work examining mechanisms of chemotherapy drug resistance, clinical studies evaluating new drugs and novel methods to improve the management of rectal cancer.

He has previously sat on the NCRI sub-groups for the treatment of rectal & anal cancer and provided oncology representation to the advisory boards of the West of Scotland Managed Clinical Networks for both Upper GI and Colorectal cancers.
